Report: Manchester City have spent more on defence than 52 countries combined

English club, Manchester City have spent more on defence more than 52 countries, according to The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Having signed Benjamin Mendy for £52m, Kyle Walker for £54m, Danilo for £27m and goalkeeper Ederson for £35m, City have now broken their transfer record to bring in Aymeric Laporte.

The £57m signing of the former Athletic Bilbao defender brings City's spending on their defence to £225m - more than many countries spend on national defence.

SIPRI, which investigates world conflict possibilities of disarmament, published data detailing every country's spending on armaments and military protections.

This reveals that 52 countries dedicated less money to their annual defence budget in 2016 - the last year of data available - than City have on transfer fees alone for defenders in the 2017-18 campaign.

The £57m spent on Laporte alone is more than 26 countries spent - and that doesn't even factor in wages or agent fees.

Guardiola justified the huge spend at a press conference for Laporte's unveiling, saying: ‘Some clubs spend £300-£400m on two players. We spend it on six players.

'We had a problem last summer with six players out of contract. When you want to compete at the highest level, you need to spend.

‘Maybe one day this club will spend £100m or £130m on one player, but we decide not to do it. We understand the inflation of the market. It is what it is. We accept criticism but what matters is our signings perform well and fit in at this club.’
