The ruling All Progressives
Congress (APC) have distanced themselves from President Muhammadu Buhari’s
comment tagging all Nigerian youths as “lazy”.
According to a statement on
their newly announced twitter handle, the party described Nigerian youths as
hardworking.
It can be recalled that
President Buhari, who spoke at the Commonwealth Business Forum in London on
Wednesday, when responding to a question after giving a keynote address
on ‘Making Business Easier Between Commonwealth
Countries’, had said: “We have a very young population; our population is
estimated conservatively to be 180 million.

“More than 60 per
cent of the population is below the age of 30. A lot of them have not been
to school and they are claiming that Nigeria has been an oil producing country,
therefore they should sit and do nothing and get housing, healthcare and
education free.”
But APC
in a swift reaction disagreed, stating, “We do not agree
with @MBuhari that the youths are lazy, they are hardworking and
deserve some credit #lazynigerianyouths.
“Despite
the preceded economic recession the Nigerian youth have proven to be
resilient #Nigerianyouthsarenotlazy.”
The
party’s reaction, however, attracted further protest from Nigerians who
described the president’s comment as an ‘insult’.
They also
vowed not to re-elect President Buhari in 2019.
One of
them, Robert Samuel, said: “You better call Mr @MBuhari to
order. His statement is an insult to all hardworking Nigerian youth.”
“The deed
is done already. How many of his age mates voted for him 2015. Same lazy youths
will show their laziness in February next year,”
another twitter user, Atoki Oluwaseun added.
